EPFO stands for Employees' Provident Fund Organisation, which is a statutory body under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. The EPFO is responsible for managing the social security funds of employees in the organized sector in India.
The EPFO manages three social security schemes:
Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) Scheme: This scheme is applicable to all establishments employing 20 or more employees. Under this scheme, the employer and employee contribute a fixed percentage of the employee's salary towards the employee's provident fund account. The EPF account provides a lump sum amount to the employee at the time of retirement, resignation or on other specified events.
Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS): This scheme is also applicable to all establishments employing 20 or more employees. Under this scheme, a fixed percentage of the employee's salary is contributed towards the employee's pension fund. The employee is eligible for a pension after completing a minimum service period of 10 years.
Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI) Scheme: This scheme provides life insurance coverage to the employees who are members of the EPF scheme. The coverage amount is based on the amount in the employee's provident fund account, subject to a maximum of Rs. 7 lakh.
The EPFO also provides services such as online registration of establishments, online transfer of provident fund accounts, and online submission of claims. The EPFO is committed to providing efficient and transparent services to the employees covered under the social security schemes.
